About the Client
A family-owned gift and homewares store in Maitland, NSW. Operating for 8 years, the business had built a loyal local following through exceptional in-store service and carefully curated product ranges. The owners relied entirely on foot traffic — no website, no online store, no social commerce. When COVID lockdowns hit, revenue dropped 60% almost overnight, exposing the danger of a single-channel business model.
The Challenge
The store had no online presence of any kind. Their Square POS contained valuable sales data but was completely siloed — there was no way to sell to customers outside the immediate Maitland area. Meanwhile, competitor gift shops in Newcastle and Sydney had been trading online for years, capturing customers the Maitland store couldn’t reach. The owners knew they needed to move online but had no idea where to start, what platform to choose, or how to manage it without a full-time team.
What We Did
- Built a WooCommerce store integrated with their Square POS so inventory syncs automatically — no double-entry
- Migrated 200+ products with descriptions, dimensions, and professional photos
- Set up Afterpay as a payment option (immediately popular with younger customers) and a local pickup option for Maitland regulars
- Implemented on-page SEO targeting “gift shop Newcastle” and “homewares Newcastle” keywords
- Provided hands-on training so the owner could manage products, process orders, and update stock herself — no ongoing agency dependency
The Results
Within six months of launch, online sales represented 35% of total revenue — a channel that hadn’t existed before. Monthly online revenue reached a consistent $4,800, effectively creating a second store without the rent. The customer base grew 2.4× as shoppers from Sydney, Canberra, and regional NSW discovered the store through Google and direct-to-consumer social media. The owners now run a genuinely omnichannel business with resilience that didn’t exist before the project.
“We were sceptical about online — we thought our customers liked coming in. Turns out they also wanted to shop at 10pm. Within three months we had regular online orders, including people from Sydney who’d never heard of us.”
— Sarah, Owner
